Site maintenance

A while back the Academy made the change to its new aomonline domain, which included shifting most divisions and interest groups to the http://group.aomonline.org domain. Most of the old links on the student web were changed in the process, but there were several links that were broken in the process. We have just finished an update that should have fixed all of these broken links, as well as updating the conference info for 2009. The change also caused some problems with our front page (which is an embedded blog). This has been resolved as well, so postings should be more frequent in the future. If you see any additional problems or have comments, please send them via the e-mail address listed at the bottom of this page.

2008 OB Doctoral Student Consortium

Call for Nominations - 2008 OB Doctoral Student Consortium - AUGUST 8-10

The OB doctoral consortium will be part of the pre-conference program at the 2008 Academy of Management meeting in Anaheim. The consortium includes an interesting and energetic mix of presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions designed to launch doctoral students on their academic careers. Topics include landing a job, getting published, teaching effectiveness, and work-life balance.

The deadline for receipt of nominations and supporting materials is May 15, 2008.

To apply, interested students must be nominated by their schools. No university can nominate more than four students, and each doctoral program within a university is limited to two nominations (e.g., two from the business school and two from the I/O program).

In making the decision to accept students, preference is given to those who have made the most progress toward completing their Ph.D. program but have not yet defended their dissertation.

Applications should be sent by the university department that nominates the student and should include in the body of the email:
* The nominee's name, address, e-mail address, phone and fax numbers,
* Name of affiliated school and university, and
* A statement certifying the nominee's completion of doctoral coursework and comprehensive exams by August 1, 2008

Three attachments to the e-mail are requested:
* A letter from a faculty member providing a general appraisal of the nominee, including an assessment of his/her progress toward a dissertation defense, expected defense date, and subject of dissertation, and
* A one-page bio summarizing the nominee's contact information, research and teaching interests, and publications.
* A 1-2 page description of the nominee's dissertation idea/methodology and progress on the dissertation.

For more information, please see the full Call for Nominations

Farmer Award for the best thesis or dissertation in International Business is open to all Ph.D. and D.B.A. students who will successfully have defended their theses/dissertations between 1st January 2007 and 31st December 2007. Any topic that contributes to basic or applied knowledge in International Business, broadly defined, is eligible to compete for this award, even if the thesis or dissertation has been submitted to other competitions. The winner will receive a plaque and a US$1,000 cash award. All finalists will receive a US$500 travel stipend, to facilitate their presenting their research at the AIB annual meeting in Milan, Italy.

The deadline for nominations is 31st January 2008. The nomination packet should include: (1) a letter of nomination from the student's thesis/dissertation supervisor or chair and (2) an abstract, not exceeding 3,750 words (approximately 15 pages, at 250 words per page), of the successfully defended thesis or dissertation. Hello!

Please find information below about a winter method short course opportunity.

Yuan Jiang

CARMA Winter Short Course: "Intermediate SEM- Model Evaluation", Jan 10-12

Below you will find information on our Winter Short Course titled "Intermediate Structural Equation Methods: Model Evaluation", which will be offered in mid-January, 2008. This Short Course is hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis (CARMA) at Virginia Commonwealth University, located in Richmond, Virginia, and it will be held January 10-12 (two and a half days). This course is aimed at faculty and students with an introductory understanding of structural equation methods, but who struggle with the challenging process of making judgments about the adequacy of models. It is targeted toward those who either fit models in their own research, regularly read SEM articles in their substantive areas and who want to better understand them, or serve as a journal reviewer and regularly judge articles using SEM.

The course will consist of five sections, with each section having a lecture and lab component:

  • Review of model specification and parameter estimation
  • Logic and computations for goodness-of-fit measures
  • Analysis of residuals and latent variables
  • Model comparison strategies
  • Analysis of participant data (participants are invited to bring their own data or data will be provided)

CARMA has arranged for reduced rates at hotels within walking distance of campus, and Richmond, Virginia has a mid-sized airport with direct flights from many US cities. For more information on CARMA and all of our programs, visit our website at http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/carma/default.asp.

The registration fee for the Winter Short Course is $350 for faculty and $250 for students coming from one of our 120 CARMA Consortium Webcast Program member schools (a list of these schools can be found on the CARMA website). The fees are $700 for faculty and $500 for students from non-Consortium Schools. After December 15, a $50 late fee is required.

If you have any questions, please contact us at carma@vcu.edu. Thanks.

Dr. Larry J. Williams, CARMA Director and University Professor of Management

Winter Short Course Instructor

Hey everyone,

I have had several students respond to my invitation to get involved in the posting to the AOM student web. We are going to be posting some messages over the next little while as everyone gets familiar with the technology. These are not linked to the listserv, so you will only be seeing them on the web. Thanks for your patience.
